Laconism.
Pascal wrote in his letter: “I have only made this letter longer, because I have not had the time to make it shorter.” Am I the only one that struggles to convey the point in a spartan brevity (I remember reading somewhere that the ‘laconic’ has Spartan origin – not sure). On one hand I want to convey the whole story, the color of it, explain away the origin, who was there, their reaction, references to sources, etc., on the other hand – I lost my audience about 30 seconds in. My version of Molon Labe (come and get it) would have been a lot longer, a lot more graphic, involving members of their families, and I’d forewarn them about their orphan kids not having future. Something along those lines. Come and get it – brilliant.
